Originally, when we first saw the car at McNab Foreign Car, Bruce Wolczanski had just bought it. In looking it over, Bruce mentioned that it had a solid floor pan (Bruce is an excellent floor pan poker as other stories indicate) and the engine had never been removed as indicated by no breaks in the undercoating around the heater plumbing. It ran good and had a believable ~58K miles on the odometer. It seemed to fit the description of a good restoration candidate as described in other stories posted here and exactly what I had described to our Dallas cousins, Vicki & Andy, who had hinted they might be interested in getting a VW. They had gained an interest by acting as stealth editors, proofreaders and technical consultants for this website (Thank You). That was my initial interest. Jacque, however, took an immediate liking to the car for me! So we started thinking about it.
Here's a few pics of it as it appeared that day, note the tailpipe & trailer hitch.
So we thought about it, I found out it wasn't a good time for our cousins to start a VW restoration, but Jacque didn't give up. Meanwhile Bruce started fixing it up for sale as shown here, and we took another look.
To make a long story a little shorter, we decided we could handle a second VW if it were air-conditioned, and partially restored in such a way that it wouldn't be a show car, but nothing would be done to prevent more significant restoration in the future. Here's some pics I used for insurance.
