Jack Hess, our
Sergeant-at-Arms, moved to Boca from
the Boston area (his accent leaves no doubt about that). Jack is another of our
members who has joined the KMA Club (meaning that he either is retired, or is
eligible for retirement, and he can tell you to kiss his ring if you hassle
him). continued
Although
a Karmann Ghia is somewhat different, this one’s special from another
standpoint. This yellow ’71 is a one owner, 31+ year old daily driver with under
56000 original miles. Jacqueline Rader bought it new from Blackhawk VW in
Davenport Iowa in November 1970 for $2534.50 and still has the original window
sticker to prove it. Not satisfied with just standard equipment she splurged
$25 extra for whitewalls and $127 for an AM/FM radio upgrade. Her father chipped
in $75 for a wooden steering wheel. Ignoring the sticker shock and wanting
something different, she traded in her yellow ‘66 Ghia (Original sticker price
$1525) for $850. It’s proved to be a great investment considering she has had
this car longer than her husband Gary (she got him “as is”, without a trade in)
and it’s clearly in better shape than he is. continued
Mike Rose, one of our more articulate members, has rewritten the old classic, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." In this modern day version, he tells the tale of his early adventures with classic VWs, and their sometimes dual personalities. Read it yourself on Mike's Story Page.
Our club president, Steve, (AKA “el presidente”) has this
unusual characteristic that he names and communicates with his VWs. He swears
that his Europe based Vanagon, Celeste, wrote this short autobiography for our
website. Here’s a picture of Bettie and Celeste together. We won’t ask Bettie
what she thinks of this behavior, but you have to read Tales
of Celeste.
Jim
Hartman (AKA Minnesota Jim) is a real VW enthusiast. He's owned 10 VWs and
has a picture and story for each. He's also one of our more remote
members, living and loving his VWs in tropical Minnesota. We can't wait to
have him back in South Florida, but in the meantime, check out his romance "Jim’s 10 VW
Love Affairs".
We
welcome our new member Devon Lawrence
and his 2001 Golf. Here's a brief background on him and his car, and the
only viable explanation for a "cold air package" in Florida. What is that,
a hot water bottle? Introducing Devon.
Right,
it's really not Steve's car, it's Bettie's. Why she lets him drive it so
much is anyone's guess. Find out more about this "automatic" tranny by reading
Bettie's Baby.
The
Club's fleet of Volkswagens includes many strange and unusual vehicles. One of
our members from Northern Ireland, Owen Shields, has a most unusual set of
wheels; he recently acquired one of three remaining "Kubelwagens" made for the
movie, "A Bridge Too Far". Read about it at Owen's
Kubelwagen
For most of his life, Greg wanted a Karmann Ghia. After a quarter of a century, he got his wish but not without some work. Restoring this convertible from the "bones" up took a while, but it's close to done (they're never done) and ready to show. Read the story of Greg's '72 Karmann Ghia Convertible.
Yep,
your Webmaster finally got his own VW, a '70 Bug as many of you know.
After soliciting stories from so many he was embarrassed not to have its story
here. Maybe he got carried away because it's more like a book (at least an
abridged and an unabridged version are available). If you got 5 or 10
minutes, please read the Blu Book.

OK,
so what is a "Retro New Beetle?" Well TJ is our resident expert, & he'll
tell you all the how's and why's behind it in Whisper's Story.
